My Nanny

Riding a camel in Israel

Tonight my Nana Betty passed away around 7:30pm. She was one of the most spirited people I have ever met and I am so glad to be her granddaughter.

My fondest memory of my nana is actually very strange. I was staying at her house for the night, which Kelly and I did quite often as youngins, and she had a few lady friends over, perhaps for snacks after a game of bunko. We were all sitting in her Florida room when she commented on how lovely it was that my breasts were growing and how I would need a bra soon. I felt so embarrassed that I told her I hated her and ran into my room crying. For some reason this memory has stuck with me and each time I think about it, I can’t help but smile and laugh at how silly it was.

Another memory I hold close to my heart was actually only a few years ago when she first started chemotherapy. Nanny was staying at our house while she underwent procedures and this was all while I was in my final years of high school. I wanted to start knitting and she taught me the basics and got me started on a hat. I knit at school and during my free time and even though I tried SO HARD, the hat came out irregular. The rim was far too tight and it fit strangely on a head. I was not very proud of it, but when I showed her, she put it on her head and said that for my first try I did very well. It was hideous, but I was happy she was happy.

I am sad she is gone, but I know it is better to have her in spirit than to have her here in pain. I love her very much and will miss her cute New England accent (pahk the cah so we can get some clam chowdah!) and her ya’s and yummy yummy’s.

The picture I have included is a photograph of her riding a camel in Israel. I recall her telling me that of all of the places she had traveled, Jerusalem was her favorite. She told me how blessed she felt staying there and being baptized in the River Jordan.
